Congested Ports could mean Christmas Delays

Posted on October 28, 2020

Hands up who is ready to give 2020 an almighty shove!

"2020 has been the year when everything that could go wrong did go wrong," says Ports of Auckland General Manager Matt Ball.

If you've been shopping lately you may notice shelves are emptier than usual.  Unfortunately, this may only worsen as we get closer to Christmas. The supply chain is broken in many international ports and an easy fix is unlikely to happen any time soon.  As we enter into the peak importing season for the year, it could result in empty shelves at Christmas time - another obstacle for retailers to face.

Heavily congested ports around the world mean your Amazon purchase may have already arrived in your country, only to be sitting in the harbour waiting for congestion to ease.

The US Postal Service has temporarily suspended the guarantee on express mail destined to China, France, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. While workers strike at Australian ports. Some cities are being bypassed, and even entire countries!

Planes being grounded due to COVID-19 has caused a pitch in sea freight demand, coupled with rigorous customs clearance procedures in most countries, the speed in which business is done has altered significantly due to the COVID-19 crisis situation.

Vehicle shipping during Covid times

The shipping industry has taken many similar measures as other sectors to keep employees safe. Depending on where your vehicle is leaving from and going to, plays a big part in what happens and how long it will take.  Shipping via sea, air, and land all have their own rules and processes.

Shipping vehicles by sea

Shipping a vehicle by sea vessel is still possible, but keep these things in mind:

  • Employ the services of an experienced vehicle shipping company. They'll take care of all the necessary paperwork, customs and will be the first to know of changes to port regulations.
  • Expect delays so it’s important to be flexible with your timeline.
  • Make sure you’re covered with marine insurance.

Countries which have successfully managed to control outbreaks of Covid19 are working as normal as possible, however, expect international shipping to be affected for some time.
