Targa NZ 2015

March means motorsport for the thousands of Targa fans in New Zealand – and the 2015 calendar kicks off on Sunday March 8 with the Metalman Targa NZ Rallysprint 2015.

Last time we checked on their Facebook page, there were still entries available as well as a couple of vacancies to help out with the organisation – a stop control post chief and a flying finish team – which means you can still get stuck into what is probably the pinnacle of Kiwi car fanatics’ race annual schedule.

Targa Sprint has been designed to “dip your toe in the Targa water” and “welcome new competitors” according to organisers, and consists of four stages, each run twice, on roads around the Clevedon/Papakura areas south of Auckland and based out of Ardmore Airport. T

he routes have been chosen to typify the longer-form Targa events with swooping roads and tight turns to provide a challenge for all drivers. There’s also plenty of spectator spots so the whole family can enjoy the ride.

All drivers do need a minimum M-grade licence but co-drivers for the Sprint won’t need a licence, meaning you can take along sponsors, spouses, service crews or mates to show them what aa spot of New Zealand rally driving is all about, complete with safety notes, route books, time cards and rally protocol.

Targa is a great event to showcase your special car and test your driving skills to the limit – and that’s why it attracts petrolheads from across the country who have imported some of the world’s great vehicles.

And for those who have a classic, European exotic or car that’s special to them, the annual events also offer a Targa Tour, which allows you to drive the same competition stages behind a driver matched to your skill levels. You’re not part of the competition but it does give you the chance to see whether you can cut it with the best.

This year’s Sprint doesn’t offer a Tour classification, but the Targa Bambina from May 14-17, which offers more than 430km of challenging special stages from Auckland, through the Coromandel and down to Rotorua, is a great chance to test out your “classic, modern or fire-breathing 4WD” on some of New Zealand’s best roads.

The main event, though, takes place around the North Island from October 26 to 31 – by which time you’ll know whether you want to test your pride and joy against the big boys or take it a little easier with the Targa Tour.
