Famous TV and Movie Cars and Motorbikes

Quadrophenia

Quadrophenia is a 1979 British film loosely based on The Who's 1973 rock opera of the same name. Starring famous faces such as Sting, Phil Daniels and Leslie Ash.  Lambrettas with multiple mirrors and lights feature heavily in the movie and helped make scooters (Lambrettas, Vespas etc) a popular form of transport worldwide.

Easy Rider

Starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, this movie is about two men riding their Harley Davidson’s from LA to New Orleans.  The most famous scene must be riding along dusty roads with ‘Born to be Wild’ by Steppenwolf in the background. (image: www.bfi.org.uk)

Back to the Future

Christopher Lloyd said to Michael J Fox in this 80’s movie, “The way I see it, if you're going to build a time machine with a car, why not do it with some style?” This famous car was a retrofitted DMC DeLorean vehicle with a flux capacitor. In the movie, it needed 1.21 gigawatts of power and had to reach 88 miles per hour (142 km/h) to initiate time travel.  How things have changed!

Knight Rider

Kitt (the car) and David Hasselhoff were 80s prime time viewing for four series. The franchise also includes three TV films, computer and video games and even novels.

Dukes of Hazard

The ‘General Lee” took brothers Luke and Bo through 146 episodes of fast-drivin', rubber-burnin' run-ins with the Hazzard County Police.

James Bond

James Bond had access to all manner of vehicles – ones that flew, went underwater (like the Lotus Espirit) or whatever the chase required. Aston Martins were Bond’s signature car and feature in many Bond movies.

Despicable Me

Gru’s enormous rocket-powered tin can vehicle (known as the Grumobile) is certainly memorable. Especially whenever he attempts to park it.   If your kids or grandkids love the Despicable Me movie, a toy version of Gru’s car can be found on Amazon.

Herbie

The most famous Volkswagen of all, Herbie first came onto our screens way back in 1968 as a character which featured in several Walt Disney motion pictures.  Commonly known as The Love Bug, Herbie had a mind of his own and was capable of driving himself.

Mr Bean

Both Bean’s mini and the unfortunate blue 3-wheeled vehicle that Mr Bean regularly capsized are equally famous.  These shows proved to us that small classics are popular across all generations.
